<>SANTA CLARITA - Swimming pools that utilize salt rather than chlorine were banned Wednesday in Santa Clarita, where concern is growing that salts are polluting freshwater supplies. The board of the Los Angeles County Sanitation District for Santa Clarita adopted the new ordinance, believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, spokeswoman Abbi Hertz said.

The move outlaws both new and existing saltwater pools that feed local sewers. Sanitizing pool water with salt is a fast-growing trend, especially in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, Hertz said.

The salt isn't noticeable in the water - unlike ocean water - but is gaining popularity because it removes the chlorine smell and is easier to u

Backwashing, I suppose. Now that they're building 4000 sq-ft houses on 6000 sq-ft lots, there's not much room to backwash onto the lawn. :-) (Did they say sewers or storm drains??)

Those of us who use DE can't backwash to the sewers / storm drains anyway.

In the Sacramento CA area the river and streams are spawning areas for a lot of sea going fish.

Any contamination through sewers or storm drains would put them at risk...

That is why cartridge filters are the best choice here...

So how can they ban salt chlorinators on a cartridge filtered Pool. Are they worried about draining? We need to lobby the state on this one.

Ted, the ban is not in the whole of LA, just Santa Clarita district. The ban applies to sewer AND drains. Someone had their head up their ... when they determined that the salt from saline pools would significantly increase salinity levels in their water supply. Tiny percentage of pools are saline and what quantity of salt would come from those pools anyway - a minuscule percentage. To show their crazy thinking, the water board told me simply to "de-salinate" the water before draining a saline pool. OK, even if I could afford to de-salinate the water, I would toss the salt into a landfill or drain and it would finish up in the water anyway.
