anyone have any thoughts on ozone systems for pools?  A few builders in my area are now using them. I have some reservations but looking for other input.  Clint

One was included with my pool when it was built (8yrs ago, 23K gal gunite). I used it for about two years then removed it. Just using the chlorine tabs seemed to be just as good. The system I used pulled ozonated air from the unit and injected it into the pump inlet. It had to be adjusted just right as not to add too much air into the system. Also would not work well when the pump was running at low speed. Between the hassle and electric use I decided to remove it. I would imagine that the UV bulb cost $$$ when a replacement is needed.

It's silly to inject ozone into a pump suction.  Ozone is extremely reactive and will destroy just about every piece of equipment that it travels through.

Ozone is very effective if properly implemented.  It should always be injected as the last item in the system before the water enters the pool.

 

I started using this on my pools about 10 years ago and have updated to include a Sta-Rite SR4000 chem feeder that will add a gallon of chlorine over a 7 day period.  On my service call day I add 6 onces of United Chemicals No More Problems.

You can find plenty of information and comments about ozone on the Internet. Just Google it. From my experience you need to spend a good deal of money on a decent CD system before you will have success in ozonating a pool. The larger the volume of water the more difficult and expenve it becomes.

Ozone is amazing stuff and probably the best adder for your pool. You simply can't achieve the same water quality without it. However, it won't fix a poorly designed pool. Nothing can. Vast amounts of chemicals might be able to mask some issues.

First you need to ensure good circulation. Not only from the pool, but to it as well. Thats flow. It need to filter properly also and thats filtration.

Then you need to decide how you want to chemically balance the water, no shortage of options there.

Unless you're a fish, you probably want some form of heat

And to put some lively sparkle in the water and take the pressure off all the above systems, add Ozone.
