"Warranties in the USA are getting ridiculous, as they did temporarily in Australia during the fast-growth period for salt systems. It is not logical to offer very long warranties on a $1500 product when you still get only a 90 day warranty on a half-million dollar home."

Who would buy any product from a manufacturer who is incapable of standing up for its reliability. Lack of a reasonable warranty is a sign of an inferior product that is not likely to perform for any reasonable period of time. Toyota and other Japanese auto makers got a good piece of the American market by making reliable automobiles, when Detroit was still figuring out ways to build in obsolescence, that is, poor reliability so that a car would have to be replaced every three years or paid for again through major repair bills. Build a reliable salt chlorinator and I might pay 1500 for it. Build a cheap, unreliable unit and I am not coming back. You can screw me once, but not more than once. The reason for the warranties is to comfort consumers. Swimming pools are an extremely harsh environment, the best quality products can be subject to neglect that will destroy them in a matter of months.

Toyota does build quality products, however most major car manufacturers are coming up to par as far as Reliability is concerned.
hyundai offered their 100k warranty to let potential consumers know that the substandard products of the past are no more, and that they will put their money where their mouth is to prove it.

Toyota/Lexus on the other hand has one of the worst (shortest) warranties in the business. That doesn't stop me from buying them however.
