I am about to actually use my salt system that was installed with my pool. So far, I have just been using trichlor. Anyway, the pool loses lots of water due to evaporation, and the city water is quite hard. It seems desirable to get rid of excess water hardness prior to starting up the salt system. Draining water is an option, but the city water is probably close to 500 ppm TDS, so with evaporation is will mean a very hard pool soon. Is there any chemical way, short of installing a water softener, that can precipitate out the hardness?

Evaporation should be no more than 1/4 in, in 24 hours...

If your pool loses more you may have a leak...

A TDS of 500 ppm is not bad. What is your Total Hardness?

I am not aware of an easy way to reduce hardness.

I tested the city water with a dip strip for total calcium hardness. It showed about 250 ppm calcium hardness (it only reads in large increments). The pool water had been tested at 1000 ppm TDS, according to the local pool store. The pool is exposed to lots of wind, has a large vanishing edge, and thus has lots of evaporation. Should I just use the 250 ppm city water for make up and not worry about messing up the salt cell with deposits?

    Thanks.

Yes. 250 ppm hardness should not be a problem.

250 is a hell of lot better than you'd find in many other areas. Be sure to buy a decent, self-cleaning salt system. Ross Townsend

Good point Ross. We also need to keep customers trained on the maintenance.
