As far as a chlorine smell, you should not have one unless you have high combined chlorine(you want below .2ppm), this is very common in Residential pools, usually test strips are just used that don't differentiate between your free available and combined. I know this does not answer your question, but I wanted to point that out. There will be three guys who have much more Residential experience than I who will be all over this topic.
