Is acid wash something I can do myself? Draining and refilling the pool is not a problem or should I get the local pool tech to do it.

Out of all the no drain acid washes I have done, 0 of them have worked. I tried UCC's 3X, and used the 4-6gallon muriatic per 10k water method many times also. The only way to truely clean up a pool is to drain it and acid wash it.

IMO a no drain acid wash is harder on the plaster than a standard one. You are putting acid into solution for a very long time. I have noticed that after attempting them that the plaster tends to get really soft. Some pools we even had to renovate.

If the plaster is applied properly ( at least 3/8 thick and the proper ratio of cement and quartz), and the acid wash is done properly, there should be no noticable time taken away from the life of the plaster.

I have been using the No Drain Acid washer since 1984 and NONE HAVE FAILED...

EVERY TIME I HAVE USED THE NDAW IT DID EXCATLY WHAT I EXPECTED IT TO DO...

Why must you use caps? I cannot speak for your experiences because they are not mine. I have tried several no drain acid washes using many different methods, and have yet to have positive results. When we drain and acid wash a pool, it looks brand new, I have seen no drains lighten the staining but never have I seen one completely remove them.

I am service manager for a large construction firm. We drain and acid wash about 40 pools a year, if I could save time, water and money by doing a no drain I would, but I never seem to get results by doing so.

ok, you guys are missing the point in trying to one up each other. As for the no drain acid, I have only had one experience with it and it was not good. As for actual acid washing DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF. When I acid wash, I am in full protective gear with respirator, goggle, gloves, chemical covers... I post a sentry either outside the room or twenty feet away from the pool. Muriatic Acid is dangerous stuff, do not underestimate it! It can over take you and burn your lungs and everything else in no time. Also depending our your local codes it could be trouble for you, your neighbors will easily smell it and make a phone call. I would recommend the safe bet and call a tech.

Check one up the Jock.  I have been doing "No Dran" since sometime in the 80's also with beautiful results.  I only once had a really tough one to do and Jock helped me with techniques.  They especially work on color pool plaster.  My only deviation to Hamilton's system is that I use costic soda to stop the process.  You have to know how long to let the process work and ya gotta know when to stop it. Some pools may take longer to work out stains.   The procedure will not work by itself, you have to get in there and brush the pool walls and floor at a minimum twice per day - the more the better - and if you can get the customer to help in between all the better.  The brushing breaks the tension between the water and the pool walls and allows the product to function as intended.  I could not be more positive about the No Dran Acid Wash system even if I worked for the company.

I am draining my pool to do an acid wash on it. I have been maintaining it for 5 years, but it needs it. when I am draining it, there is water coming back in to the pool I turned off the return, but it didn't change anything. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on any particular acid wash brand? thanks!
