When I run my pump without my heater on everything is ok.  When I turn valves to push water through the heater the pump sand starts being pumped through the system and out the return jets.  I can even hear it going through the pipes.  All hardware on the system has been there for over a year without any problems.

If this is thefirst time you've run your heater since installing the filter the startup of the filter may have excluded the essential backwash upon starting the pump after adding sand and possibly pushed sand into the heat exchanger where it has been sitting waiting to be washed out into the pool. Given enough time the sand should wash from the heater. Although this is not a good situation small amount of sand may not hurt exchanger if removed and not allowed to re-enter. I know of no other reason to have sand in the system selectively.
