Lots of dealers are using non-iodized household salt (50 lb bags).

Any salt is okay as long as it is 99.5% pure. Do not use water softener salt with anti-caking agents, metal control agents or rock salt (too dirty).

Some companies make a specialized salt that includes numerous additives especially designed for salt water chlorine generators.

there are several kinds of water softener salts. Some with additives, but you can also by plain old 99.5% pure salt that is packaged for water softeners. Just read the fine print on the bag. If it's just salt it's fine to use. $3.50 a bag at home depot beats $15 per bag at the pool store!

Check the bag carefully. Salt must be SODIUM CHLORIDE. make sure you do not get sold POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, which is also sold for water softeners. Another 'salt' which is sometimes used in error is sodium cyanide which is sold as Yellow Prussia salt (or something like that). As long as your salt is sodium chloride, you're OK. Ross Townsend
