Hey guy's I need some help. Here's a bit of history. I have a 21' round AG pool. I switched to salt last year with excellent results. This year though I have been fighting green water. Not sure if it's Algae or not but it is green. I took a sample down for analysis and everything checked out ok except for the total and free chlorine. This was back in the spring.

Sat index .1. TDS 5000. CYA 80. Tot Ch 1 Free .6 PH 7.5 Alk 166 Total Adj. 142. Salt 3100 ppm

I shocked the system but still had green water. I then drained the entire pool, refilled and balanced the water before starting the CL Gen again. The water was crystal clear for about two weeks. Then we had a pool party for my kid. 12 kids swimming all afternoon. Right after the party, I Shocked the water for 8 hrs. The next morning (this past Sun) the water was very cloudy and has since turned green. I took another sample down to the pool store:

Sat index .3 TDS 5000. CYA 80. Total Chlorine 9.6 Free 8.8 Ph

Green water is usually from copper. Why didn't the pool store do a copper and an iron test? Take a sample of your water to a pool store that can measure copper. If more than 0.4 ppm use a chemical metal remover.

Green water can also be from algae or from high TDS.

It seems like you have go the algae thing covered with that much chlorine. But you never know. Green from algae is usually cloudy green, not clear green.

I also wonder why both times you had your water tested that the TDS was exactly 5000 ppm? Didn't you drain and refill? If yes, how did your TDS still read 5000 ppm? Your salt level is 3100 ppm then where did the other 1900 ppm come from if it was new water? Seems a little funny to me.

Lastly, are you using municipal water or well water or surface water or what?

Thanks Bob for the reply. I ended up manually shocking and turned the switch to super chlorinate for 24 hrs. I also added a clarifier and the next morning, the water had cleared up. There were two things that I did wrong. First, there was not enough free chlorine available before we had the swim party and I didn't run the pump long enough after the party.

I have to remember that just because I have a salt system, I still have to do my part... keeping the Ph balaced, etc. I did notice that you have posted previously on TDS in salt pools. I need to read that more in depth as I'm still a bit confused on the subject. Thanks again for your help.
